Redis in Practice: Cache, Queue and Stream

Learn Redis by using it for the three jobs it does best. Speed up an app with caching, run background jobs with reliable queues, and build event pipelines with streams and consumer groups. Every example runs against a real Redis 8 in Docker and shows the output it actually produced.

Who it is for

Backend developers who know a little Python and want to use Redis correctly in production, not just call GET and SET.

Before you start

  • Basic Python (functions, dictionaries, running a script)
  • A laptop that can run Docker (the setup page walks you through it)
  • A terminal you are comfortable opening

What you will be able to do

  • Explain why Redis is fast and choose the right data structure for a job
  • Add a cache-aside layer with TTLs, eviction and safe invalidation
  • Protect a system from cache stampedes, penetration, avalanches and Redis outages
  • Build reliable job queues with acks, retries, delayed jobs and dead letters
  • Use streams and consumer groups for durable, replayable event processing
  • Combine cache, queue and stream in one production-style Docker Compose app
